The Polygon Orchard

The Polygon's First Community Garden

About the Community Garden

This space is to be enjoyed by everyone who lives or visits The Polygon. Situated at the entrance to the Rollesbrook Greenway on Wilton Avenue, this patch of land was once a favourite fly-tipping spot. With the support of Southampton City Council, Mayfield Nurseries, Wilder Hampshire and many invaluable volunteers, this space is taking shape into a hub for nature and those who love it to thrive.

The mural has been painted on the side of a brick bin shed, with permission from the apartment block owners. The creativity and artwork is the work of Mural23, an initiative led by local artist Tom Stewart and his team. Purely voluntary, the mural was painted over a a weekend in March 2023 with the aim to draw attention to the importance of wildlife in the Rollesbrook Greenway, and provide a splash of colour for residence and school children passing by.

In April 2023, volunteers gathered together do a litter pick that extended into the Greenway,  The earth was turned over and the pathway constructed out of donated materials. Southampton City Council donated the bark chippings for the pathway. The following weekend, plants were chosen carefully on their attractiveness, hardiness and suitability for supporting native wildlife. We consulted with Wilder Southampton, who also donated a bug hotel gifted by the Girl Guides. By the end of the month, three trees were planted: cherry, apple and pear. Work continues, and will for years to come. We would love to have you involved no matter what your skill or experience. Please email polygonra@gmail.com to get in touch
